The ruins are located on the Chojnik hill (627 m above sea level), above the district of Jelenia Góra - Sobieszów. Chojnik Castle was built in the 14th century by the Piast prince of Świdnica-Jawor, Bolko II, as one of the elements of the fortification system of the duchy's borders.
The next owners of the building were the Schaffgotsch family, who expanded the facility in the spirit of the Renaissance. Since the great fire in 1675, when the family moved to the palace in Sobieszów, the castle has remained a permanent ruin, now open to the public.
Two trails lead to the building, both for hikers and cyclists. The former can, while climbing, penetrate the so-called Smugglers' Cave. The red trail is a trail leading to the castle along a paved road. Families with children can overcome it without any major problems. The black trail is intended for more advanced hikers due to sections requiring rock climbing. Regardless of which route you choose, you will reach the castle in about 30 minutes. You can easily enter the Karkonosze National Park and the castle ruins with your dog on a leash.
