The history of the Wang Church begins far from Poland – in the small Norwegian town of Vang, situated on Lake Vangsmjøsa. The church was built at the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries, during the early Christianization of Scandinavia, when the distinctive wooden stave churches were being built.
For centuries, it served the local community, but over time it proved too small and required costly renovation. In the 19th century, the decision was made to sell it. The church was purchased by the Prussian King Frederick William IV, who initially planned to move it to Berlin as part of a museum collection.
Ultimately, however, the church's fate changed thanks to Countess Fryderyka von Reden, who suggested it be moved to Karpacz, where the local Protestant community needed a church. After being transported and reassembled in 1844, the church was opened and has operated since then as the Wang Church in Karpacz.
Today it is the only Norwegian stave church of its kind outside Scandinavia, which gives it a unique, almost symbolic character.
Although many tourists visit the Wang Church primarily because of its extraordinary history, it is also worth taking a moment to quietly admire the church itself and its immediate surroundings.
The interior of the Wang Church retains many elements characteristic of early Scandinavian art. Floral and animal motifs, as well as runic inscriptions, can be seen on the wooden portals and columns. Of particular note are two winged dragons tearing apart a horizontal figure eight, interpreted as a symbol of the constant struggle between good and evil.
Also worth examining are the carved Viking faces located near the temple's inner door. Their forked tongues symbolized the passing on of knowledge and experience to subsequent generations.
One of the most interesting facts about the Wang Temple is its construction method. The structure was built at the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries from Norwegian pine, rich in resin, which has ensured its durability for centuries. Interestingly, not a single nail was used in its construction. All elements were joined using traditional carpentry joints. Some of the original posts, columns, and portals brought from Norway can still be admired today.
A distinctive feature of the church's surroundings is the tall stone bell tower, which was added after the church was moved to Karpacz. Its purpose was not only to hang the bells but also to protect the wooden structure from strong gusts of wind from Mount Śnieżka.
Nearby is a small mountain cemetery. Both parishioners and those who died during expeditions to the Karkonosze Mountains are buried there. There is also a memorial to Countess Friedrich von Reden, without whom the Wang Church likely would never have come to Karpacz.
The location of the Wang Church makes many tourists consider it more than just a tourist attraction. The square surrounding the church offers picturesque views of the Karkonosze Mountains, and the surrounding area invites further walks.
This is where one of the most popular trails begins, leading to the Samotnia Mountain Hut and Mały Staw. More experienced hikers can continue towards Śnieżka, and along the way, they can see the distinctive rock formations of Pielgrzymy and Słonecznik.

The Wang Church is located in Karpacz Górny at 8 Na Śnieżkę Street, at an elevation of approximately 885 meters above sea level. Access to the church is straightforward, with distinctive brown tourist signs featuring a miniature wooden church marking the route. Signage can be seen on routes leading from Jelenia Góra, Kowary, and the center of Karpacz.
There's no parking directly at the church, so you'll need to park your car a bit further away. Finding a parking space during peak season may require some patience, as the Wang Church is visited by thousands of tourists each year.

The interior of the temple can be visited all year round, but opening hours vary depending on the season.
From April 15 to October 31
From November 1 to April 14
On Sundays and holidays, services are held at 10:00 AM, so visits are only possible after these have concluded. On Saturdays, it's also worth considering weddings taking place in the church, as visits are only possible after 11:30 AM.
There is a fee to visit the interior of the Wang Church. Tickets can be purchased on site.
