And then it appears – a small wooden shelter perched right on the shore of Mały Staw, surrounded by the steep walls of a glacial cirque. Looking at the Samotnia Shelter, it's hard to believe its history began over 350 years ago. The first mention of this place dates back to 1670, when a small shepherd's hut stood by Mały Staw. Over time, as the Karkonosze Mountains began to attract more and more tourists, the facility evolved into a shelter for mountain hikers. Samotnia's current appearance was shaped primarily in the 19th century.
Over the years, the shelter has had many owners, but the Siemaszko family is particularly noteworthy, having spent over half a century cultivating the place's atmosphere. It was then that Samotnia gained a reputation as a shelter with soul – one you return to not only for the views, but also for the atmosphere.
Several trails of varying difficulty lead to Samotnia, making it a perfect destination for families with children and those planning a longer hike in the Karkonosze Mountains.
The most frequently chosen route is blue trail starting at the Wang Temple. This is where most tourists visiting the Samotnia Shelter depart from each day.
The trail begins right at the entrance to Karkonosze National Park. The initial section is the most demanding, but after about two kilometers the terrain flattens out significantly, and the rest of the hike becomes much more gentle.
Along the way, we pass the KPN Glade, where benches and tables invite you to take a short rest. It's also a place from which you can admire characteristic Karkonosze rock formations, such as the Pilgrims and the Sunflower.
The final section leads through the forest and rocky paths until Mały Staw (Little Pond) emerges from behind the trees, with Samotnia standing on its shore. This is the moment many tourists consider the most beautiful of the entire trip.
People who want to shorten their hike or plan to stay overnight in a shelter with larger luggage can use the cable car to Kopa.
From the upper station, there are several options for accessing Samotnia. The shortest takes about 40 minutes, while a slightly longer route allows for easy elevation gain and allows for breathtaking views of the Karkonosze Mountains. This option is often chosen by families with children and those who want to combine a visit to Samotnia with a further hike towards the Silesian House or Śnieżka Mountain.
The walking time depends primarily on the chosen trail. The most popular route from the Wang Temple usually takes approximately 70–90 minutes one way, and the entire trip, including rest at the shelter, usually takes just a few hours.
If you're planning a walk with children, it's worth setting aside a full day for this trip. This way, you don't have to rush, and you can stop for photos, relax by Mały Staw (Little Pond), or eat lunch at the mountain hut.
Although the hike to Samotnia isn't the most difficult in the Karkonosze Mountains, it's worth remembering that it's still a mountain trail. Good shoes, appropriate clothing, and checking the weather forecast before setting out are essential for a successful hike.

It's best to leave your car at one of the parking lots in Karpacz Górny, near the trail entrance. Parking spaces fill up quickly during the season, so it's worth arriving early.
